Vocal Training

Guide to finding the right instructor

  • Find out if the instructor teaches a particular technique and what genres you can sing utilizing it. Make sure it’s a match.
  • Investigate their credentials.
  • Find out their philosophy. Do they teach primarily technique? Do they teach artistry as well? What level of importance do they place on each of these things?
  • Book one session and try them out. It’s ok to try out a few teachers to make sure you get the best one for you.
  • Choose the teacher based on what they have to offer, not price. Sometimes a half hour lesson with a great teacher can be far more beneficial than an hour with a less skilled instructor.
  • Do they have contacts in the industry that could be helpful for you? This is not a requirement for a good instructor, but it’s a plus.

Songwriting Coaching

  • Book one session and try them out.
  • Do they have contacts in the industry that could be helpful for you?

Artist Development

Guide to finding the right coach

  • Can the technique they are teaching be used with any genre of music?
  • How highly does your instructor value technique?
  • How highly does your instructor value emotional expression?
  • Can the instructor help you find your own individuality while performing a cover tune or original piece of music?

Demo Productions

Steps to getting your demo made

Singers:

  • Study/Practice – develop and grow your voice, gain command of your instrument
  • Pick and prepare your songs
    • Choose carefully – make sure they fit your voice and style
    • Know them well…work out as much detail of your performance before you go into the studio
  • Perform live…a lot! There’s just no substitute for experience.
  • Do practice recording sessions. You will feel much more confident in the studio when you record if you’ve gotten comfortable with the process. I have recording equipment and can help you do this in your lessons.

Songwriters:

  • Write your song and do lots of re-writes
  • Play it for people you trust to make sure it’s ready
  • Record a piano/vocal or guitar vocal
  • Find a good producer/studio – www.ptpmusic.com
  • Choose the right singer for the song…even if it’s not you (this is hard for singers to do, but very important in selling your songs)
